I've got a friend who is going to take a look at it possibly this coming week. He thinks it is probably fixable - likely the power-supply, so I may be back in action properly before too long. Functioning desktops can be be had for 50 bucks or so, but don't expect the latest greatest. Know anybody with a corporate type job? Many large businesses giveaway, or sell for giveaway prices, obsolete computers. My buddy was recently given an old laptop. Battery was DOA, but I hooked him up with a giveaway power adapter, and it works fine -- used in stationary mode. Need software? Educate yourself about torrents and cracks.
