Stupid things I have been thinking of lately: Dung beetles fighting over doody. We have dung beetles around here, actually. Out in the Flint Hills. When you go out on the gravel roads along cow pastures, it is not uncommon to see a beetle rolling a poo-pellet along the ground. Or several beetles quarreling over [...]

So, my dumb ass has decided to participate in NoBloPoMo, or whatever the hell they call it. Because I am crazy. Also because I feel like I could use a swift blogging kick in the pants and that may be the boot to administer it. Or something like that. And because it is late and [...]

Slade pretty much owns over Quiet Riot. QR basically made their fortune in America as a Slade cover band, but they lacked something crucial. Noddy Holder. Good lord, I love the bassline of this song. It literally makes me happy. A little better effort than on Mama Weer All Crazy, but still…I gotta say I [...]

What to say?

Most people are seriously more articulate than I am…and it appears that some of us are feeling a particular malaise these days. I just read Sarah Spahr’s entry for today and thought, “gosh, she pretty much said just and exactly what’s on my mind right about now” as regards Norway, Amy Winehouse, and just generally [...]

Oh Lord, won’t you buy me

a Honda Accord? This tickled my funnybone today. I’d been wanting to hear Janis Joplin’s famous “Mercedes Benz” and came across the parody. I must say that whomever it was sang this song did a damn fine job of mimicking Joplin’s iconic gravelly wail. Ace stuff. And while I’m on the Janis tear, here are [...]

I have become ridiculously fond of the Black Dice and other similar bleep-gizzle-frunzzzz type music. It is completely fantastic if you like weird music made up of random electronic bonking noises and zoinky sounds and general chopped-stirred-and-fried bleep-gleep effects. At work, we are allowed to listen to streaming ‘net radio, so long as we either [...]

Mistake: listening to Prince while reviewing concrete contracting documents. Phrases like “coordinate with other trades as required for any penetrations, embedded items, or sequence of work issues” and “reinforcing steel to be furnished by Concrete Contractor,” suddenly become fraught with nasty, dirty double entendre.

Apropos of pretty much nothing, Perez Prado’s “Patricia” popped into my head and stayed for the day while I was out riding the trails at Smithville yesterday. It’s a surprisingly good song to mountain bike to, actually.

On my way home from work today, I rode past some very busy fireworks stands in the West Bottoms. If you know Kansas City, you might know about James Street and the half dozen or so semi-abandond buildings that become explosives emporia in the week leading up to Independence day. Being as today is The [...]
